I had read several reviews prior to purchase as I wanted to make sure this would work on a Mac. I use Comcast as my ISP and the SBG900 is an approved modem/gateway for use on their network. Needless to day, the setup was easy and took about 10 min. I had to call Motorola tech support on security setup and they were fantastic, walking me through the process in a few minutes. I also like the combination modem/wireless router in a single box. I'd definitely recommend the Motorola unit for others.
I am using the SBG900 with a Compaq F750US.At first it would constantly drop the wireless connection and sometimes I had to reboot both the laptop and the modem. Then I installed Vista Service Pack 2 and that problem vanished. The only problem now is that the connection speed is a bit slower while on wireless. Wired I always get 12MB/s or more for Download and 4MB/s or more for Upload, but using Wireless I never get anything above 9MB/s for Download.
I had to reboot the device pretty much very single day - few times a day. I've been using Motorola SURFboard SBG900 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable ModemGateway for about a month and I'm very happy with it so far. I had Linksys wireless cable modem for years and I hated it so much because of the unstable connection. After read the reviews and decided to give Motorola a try, I'm glad I did. With the help of Motorola customer service, set up wasn't too difficult.
Give it a try, you don't have anything to lose except time. Although it has only one Ethernet port, but that can be solved by adding a multi channels hub or router.
The setup was quite simple & user friendly. I decided to buy this wireless cable modem based on Amazon reviews.
Best of all, two pieces of hardware combined into one. The quick installation guide was straight forward, I didn't have any problem whosoever setting everything within 30 minutes.
Highly Recommended for those who want something simple. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this product.
Btw, my internet service provider is charter communication.
Mine came from the internet service provider (ISP) so I had no choice in the matter -- it was the cable modem the ISP insisted on issuing -- so I had to negotiate with the ISP to cripple the firewall and router functions. The Motorola SBG900 is notorious for its incompatibility with Vonage, the Voice-over-Internet-protocol (VOIP) telephony provider. Vonage devices simply do not work reliably with this device if the router and network-address-translation firewall are enabled. Once that was done, it began to function as a simple cable modem and allowed me to connect my own router, which supports Vonage. Thus, if you are interested in using Vonage or a similar VOIP service, avoid the Motorola SBG900.
